KOTAPINANG – Demonstrating strong commitment to social welfare and humanitarian support, the Class III Kotapinang Correctional Institution (Lapas Kotapinang) has distributed social assistance package to the families of inmates (Warga Binaan Pemasyarakatan – WBP) categorized as underprivileged or vulnerable.
The distribution event was carried out directly by the leadership and officers of Kotapinang Prison as a concrete implementation of the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Affairs’ directives. The initiative aims to support inmate families who face economic difficulties while their primary breadwinners are undergoing correctional rehabilitation.
Head of Kotapinang Class III Prison emphasized that the correctional system is not only focused on internal rehabilitation for inmates, but also extends its social responsibility to the families waiting outside. The assistance program seeks to lighten the financial strain on families and ensure basic nutritional needs are met.
In addition to providing material support, the initiative acts as a psychological boost for inmates. Knowing that their loved ones outside receive care and attention from prison authorities gives inmates peace of mind, allowing them to focus better on their rehabilitation programs inside the facility.
The handover process took place smoothly and orderly under strict monitoring by prison officials. Representatives of the recipient families expressed deep gratitude to Kotapinang Prison for showing empathy and tangible care during challenging times.
The social assistance program forms part of the national agenda pushed by the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Affairs through its 13 Acceleration Programs. This initiative aligns with broader government directives under the Cabinet’s policy framework, focusing on poverty alleviation, food security, and social protection for vulnerable groups.
Across North Sumatra and various regions in Indonesia, correctional facilities have been actively transforming the perception of prisons. Beyond maintaining security and discipline, institutions like Kotapinang Prison serve as centers for character building, skill acquisition, and community-oriented social action.
By fostering stronger humanitarian ties with inmates’ families, the prison administration hopes to build a solid foundation for reintegration. When inmates eventually complete their sentence, having strong family support and a positive relationship with correctional institutions significantly reduces recidivism rates and helps them transition smoothly back into society.
